Save Lohara / Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
21 Nov 2008
The proposal for the Lohara open cast mining project by Adani Power in the jungles adjacent to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) HAS BEEN REJECTED BY the Union ministry of forest and environment.
Ekjoot team congratulates and thanks all of those who supported this protest.
Ekjoot is a common platform of NGO’s dedicated to Nature and Wildlife conservation who have jointly put up a fight against mining activities on forest land.
We learnt through media reports about allocation of coal mining lease to M/S Adani Power Ltd. at Lohara-Junona Reserve Forest adjacent to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur(Maharashtra). Our investigations brought forth startling revelations about likely destruction of thick forest cover in the above said forest, which is also a habitat of Schedule 1 wild animals and birds other than regular flora and fauna.
It should be noted that the mining activities encompass activities like blasting, deployment of heavy machinery, settlement of labour colony and disposal of over burden in the thick forest are all detrimental to the ecology.
Therefore we decided to join hands with other like minded NGO’s(i.e. Lohara Jungle Bachao Sangharsh Samiti) and other nature loving people to thwart above destruction of forest and wildlife near tadoba. The location of the proposed coal mine falls just under 10km buffer zone of TADOBA and part of the reserve forest itself.
Tadoba -Lohara Map for reference
Per say we are not against the Adani Power Plant which is coming up at Tiroda(Gondia). But we are opposing the excavation of coal and in turn destruction of forest in Lohara-Junona Reserve Forest.
The coal for above power project could be made available from alternate sites reportedly available in abundance.
It is reliably learnt that other mining proposals are already in the pipeline awaiting similar clearance which if not stopped now would completely destroy Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and surrounding forests.
Therefore we solicit support from all nature loving people to strengthen our hands to fight for nature’s conservation.
We also appeal to give wide publicity in order to awaken people at large and we also welcome your comments/suggestion to save Taboba forest.
